Constantly scouring the country for quality pieces of glass is a time-consuming business. Because they are often very old and fragile vintage bottles frequently turn up with broken tops.
Saving damaged antique glass is our passion and we can’t bear to see any of them consigned to the bin. So we work with a skilled craftsman and carefully check and mark each bottle for refurbishment here in the UK. Damage is cut off and the tops ground down to make it safe to use.
What was undesirable can now be re-purposed as a diffuser and enjoy a second life in your home. Buying bottles of this quality in today’s market would be incredibly expensive because of the sheer skill and quality of the cutting.
Most of the antique bottles we sell are old “cruet bottles” that date from the Victorian and Edwardian period. Every self-respecting dinner table would have displayed one. Usually housed in a silver plated stand in sets of four or more, the bottles generally contained salt, pepper, mustard, vinegar and oil.
Glassmaking during the Industrial Revolution in Britain was simply world leading with the biggest production being in the North East, West Midlands and London.
New techniques and mechanisation meant bottles could be produced in large numbers with cutting and finishing done by hand. Cruet bottles are generally quite easy to date by their style of cutting and design.
At V&B we pride ourselves on saving damaged antique glass bottles from the charity shop or worse still the bin! These lovely bottles are still useful and deserve to be loved again in our modern homes.
