Natural versus Synthetic?

Natural versus Synthetic Fragrances

The Benefits of Natural vs. Synthetic Fragrances

When it comes to fragrance, we all desire that perfect blend that not only scents our homes beautifully but also aligns with our values and well-being.

At Vintage & Bespoke, we understand that choosing the right fragrance is about more than just a delightful aroma; it’s about making informed choices for your health and the environment.

In this post, we’ll explore the benefits of natural vs. synthetic fragrances, helping you make choices that resonate with your lifestyle.

Understanding the Difference

Natural fragrances are derived from plant materials, including flowers, leaves, fruits, and resins. These scents are often created through methods like steam distillation or cold pressing, which preserve the integrity of the plant’s essential oils.

On the other hand, synthetic fragrances are chemically manufactured in laboratories and can mimic the scent of natural ingredients providing a broad spectrum of aromas that can be produced in higher quantities.

So which is better?

Nature has created some of the most volatile and harmful substances on the planet. We all know Digitalis (Foxglove) or Deathcap Mushrooms are fatal.

Natural Fragrances like Nutmeg oil can be carcinogenic in high concentration but there is a perception that because an ingredient is “natural” it must be inert, benign and therefore good for us. Tea tree oil is under threat of being banned in the UK and EU after assessments by regulators have found that it is toxic to reproduction.

However, natural fragrances are less likely to contain harmful phthalates and parabens—chemicals frequently found in synthetic products that can disrupt hormones and contribute to various health issues. For those sensitive to strong scents, natural fragrances often provide a much gentler option.

Speaking to our compliance Chemist Mel on the matter he said…” I am a chemist by training, and for me it does not matter whether the molecule is made in a lab or a plant – they will have the same hazards.”

Synthetic fragrances have become very sophisticated and are used by most of the global fragrance market. Natural ingredients can be extremely expensive with Jasmine being a good example, it takes literally thousands of flowers to make just one gram of oil.

Oudh is a resin made from the wood of the Agar Tree fashionably used in perfumery. At a time when sustainability is so important, synthetic alternatives to Jasmine and Oudh really do help to preserve our natural resources. Some would argue that synthetics lack the depth and sophistication of their natural counterparts but it seems a small price to pay for our demand and consumption of these ingredients, amounting to millions of tonnes going in everything from Shampoo to Candles and floor cleaner.

Our fragrances…

Here at V&B we believe there is a place for both…and at every event customers will always ask for reassurance that our fragrances are 100% natural – and we have always been open and honest, we use both.

A good indication of natural components is colour, if the array of diffusers on offer are all colourless despite all the different fragrance names, it’s a pretty safe bet they are all 100% synthetic from the lab.

The colour of our bespoke scents varies enormously throughout our collection because of the natural ingredients within them, eventually changing the colour of our diffuser flowers once they begin diffusing.

We work with a UK perfumier to design our exclusive fragrance collection which is produced in small batches by a UK supplier with the highest standards and all our products go through strict third-party chemical compliance to make sure they are safe for your use.
