This is an article that made me feel good, vindicated and quietly fist pumping in my head. It’s about don’t judge a book by it’s cover, and then some…
You may not have seen it but I’m talking about an article in Country Life magazine about the home of Royston Jones and Fiona Gray. From the outside, no631 Llangyfelach Terrace in Swansea is entirely unassuming — just another predictable looking house in a row. But step inside, and it is the absolute anti-thesis of the exterior, a serene, neoclassical haven that completely rewrites the rules.
It made my heart sing — There’s no attempt to change the outside, it is what it is, and the contrast is all the more fabulous. Inside they have re-created in incredible detail the historical architecture and interiors they are both obviously so passionate about – gorgeous plasterwork and classical details everywhere. Their story echoes something I’ve long believed: be true to your own style and that will never really go out of fashion…and that happiness doesn’t always come from having more.
The “Perfect Myth”
For a long time, I felt the pressure to keep up with an idea of the “perfect home.” We all know it — spacious open kitchen, sash windows, garden views, bespoke fabrics you don’t recognise, expensive furniture and decor in an oh-so elegant (but not trendy) colour palette. Prep kitchen? Boot room? It’s the kind of perfection that comes at a cost — financial, emotional, and often creative.
After my divorce, I left behind a six-bedroom house set in half an acre. People were surprised — probably shocked — when I moved into a modest home on a housing estate. Some couldn’t understand it. But it felt like the biggest breath of fresh air. For the first time in a long time, I was free to make something that was just mine.
Beauty on a Budget
There wasn’t much of a budget. But there was a plan. I had a mission: to make my home feel personal, joyful, and meaningful — not perfect, not expensive, just right for me. Thirty years of designing, collecting and a loving antiques finally took flight.
Facebook Marketplace became my best friend. So did family hand-me-downs, car boot sales, and the occasional skip. I reused what I had, re-painted, and sewed. I made things fit, and most importantly, it made me question the idea of cost, and the real value of things. Some things were scrimped on and others were a splurge. (bed linen, glassware and really good paint)
Yes, age brings character and things with a history have more to give – the same applies to homes. But like No.631 in Swansea I cant change the windows or the 80’s structure of my home – I have to embrace it and work with it.
The Luxury of Meaning
What Wyatt and Fiona Gray have done is bold — but not because it cost a fortune I’m sure. It’s bold because they dared to express themselves to such a powerful level, ignoring trends to create something deeply personal. I love that they kept the 60’s gas fire in the dining room, that would have been designed to mimic a classical fireplace in it’s day. It’s honest and genius, and it shows this home clearly brings them joy every day.
I guess I’ve tried to do this with Vintage & Bespoke, it’s all about how things make you feel…Whether it’s a hand-painted antique bottle or a single fragrant flower in a corner of the room, true beauty lies in it’s history and quality and the story behind the object.
Your Home, Your Rules
So if you’re scrolling through picture-perfect homes online feeling overwhelmed because yours doesn’t match up — please stop. Beauty isn’t in the square footage or your postcode. It’s in how a place reflects you.
Surround yourself with things you love. Fill your rooms with scent, music, light, laughter and your memories. Find elegance in the worn and the weathered, the inherited and the out-dated. And never underestimate the power of a single beautiful thing in an unexpected place that only you appreciate the meaning of.
After all, it’s not about what your home looks like from the outside — it’s how it makes you feel when you step through the door.
